‘The Fox and the Crow,’ a fable retold by Thomas
One day a crow was sitting on a branch of a tree holding a piece of cheese in her beak. A fox came and said, “Good morning, Mrs Crow. How lovely you look.” The crow was pleased the fox said that and nodded her head but said nothing. The fox put on his best smile and said, “I bet you are a beautiful singer. Can you sing to me whilst I try to sleep under the tree?” the crow was so flattered she instantly dropped the cheese and sang, “Happy birthday to me! Happy birthday to me!” in a crooked voice but whilst she was singing she had dropped the cheese. Now the fox saw his chance and immediately jumped on it and gobbled it up and politely said, “Thank you.” The crow was busy singing so she did not hear. In the end, she finished, swooped down to look for the cheese but there was no sign of it. Then she understood what had happened and punished herself for being so silly.
Moral: Beware of flattery. It may not be meant.
‘The Fox and the Crow,’ a fable retold by Julia
The crow was sitting on a branch of a tree. There was a piece of cheese in her beak. The fox was very hungry. He saw the crow. He put his best smile on and he said, “What a lovely singer you are! Can you sing me to sleep?” the crow was vain and started to sing. The cheese fell down. The fox jumped on the piece of cheese and said, “Thank you.” The crow was angry because of being so silly.
‘The Fox and the Stork,’ a fable retold by Danah
Once upon a time there was a fox. One day the fox made a soup and he wanted a friend that could not eat all of the soup, so he thought and said, “Could a lion eat all of the soup or could he not? No, the lion would eat all of the soup.” So he thought and thought and thought. “Oh!” he said, “A stork could not eat all the soup.” So he invited the stork. The stork came and the fox put a thin dish on the table and the fox had a thick dish. Then he put the soup in the dishes so he ate all the soup, but the stork could not because his beak is so long and the dish is so thin. So the fox ate it all. One day the stork invited the fox and made a soup and put it in a bottle. So the stork just started eating the soup but the fox could not eat because the bottle neck was tall and narrow. Then they were no longer friends
‘How the Camel Got his Hump’, by Thomas
A long time ago before the world was very old there was a camel. He was very idle. On Monday morning the horse went to him and said, “Oh, Camel, Oh Camel, come and canter like the rest of us. “Humph!” said the camel. And the horse went to tell the man. Then a dog came and said, “Oh, Camel, Oh Camel, come and fetch and catch like the rest of us.” “Humph!” said the camel and the dog went to tell the man. Then an ox came and said, “Oh, Camel, Oh Camel, come and plough like the rest of us.” “Humph!” said the camel and the ox went to tell the man. The man called all three animals for a meeting and said, “If that ‘humph’ thing doesn’t turn up, you’ll have to do two extra jobs.” The animals were very angry and went to talk. The camel saw them and howled with laughter. Then suddenly in a whirl of dust a genie appeared and said, “What’s the matter?” “It’s all about this camel who never works!” said the horse. “That’s my camel,” the genie said. “What does he say? Only humph? I’ll soon sort him out.” The genie went to the camel and said, “Is it true that you haven’t worked at all?” “Humph!” said the camel. “If I were you I wouldn’t say that again.” “Humph! ARRRGH! ! How can I work with this hump?” “Oh yes you can. Go on!” and from that day on, every camel has a lump.
‘How the Camel Got his Hump’, by Ritaj
A long time ago before the world was very old there was a camel who was idle. He lived in the desert with a dog, ox and horse. The animals were working hard except the camel. One morning the horse went to have a word with him. He said, “Do you want to come with us? You could help us.” “Humph!” said the camel. “You don’t want to help!” “Humph!”
“OK I will leave you.” The camel kept eating all the food again. Next morning there was a dog that wanted to speak to the camel. He thought the camel would want to help but he just said, “Humph!” That’s all he had to say. The dog wasn’t surprised. He was disappointed. On Wednesday the camel didn’t help at all. He was drinking milk. When the camel needed to sleep an ox came. He made a loud voice. He said, “Do you want to help?” “Humph! Humph!” “Oh why don’t you want to help? We need your help. You can carry eight things we can’t.” “Humph! Humph!” “You are so rude.” On Thursday they were still working and the camel was enjoying his time with his food. But someone could help. Suddenly a man came. He could help. He could do magic. The horse came and asked the man, “Is it OK if someone’s idle?” “Oh, certainly not!” “He lives in the desert and he only says “Humph!” the dog said, “It only says “Humph!” when we talk to him. “That’s my camel,” said the man who could do magic. “He was being idle. He always says “Humph!” said the dog. “Oh, I will ‘humph’ him. Just wait,” said the man. “Look, camel, if you say “Humph!” I will show you something. “Humph!” Suddenly without saying anything the camel got its ‘humph’. And now he doesn’t need to have a rest. He always gets on. Then he lived happily ever after with his ‘humph’!
