Sports NewsBoth the U14 and U16 Netball teams produced outstanding performances in their league matches against Woodlands School last Tuesday. The U14 side won their match 14-5, with Year 8 pupils Rebecca Waldron and Annabel Shawcroft producing fine performances alongside their Year 9 team mates. The U16 side achieved a 15-7 win, goals coming thick and fast from Frankie G and Louise D. The Year 10/11 Football team started their match against St. George’s School in fine form, and were leading 1-0 at half-time, thanks to some outstanding playing by Laurie D. Unfortunately their form faltered in the second half, with the final score 7-1 to St. George’s. Our Year 9 Netball team gave an excellent performance against a very strong Bitterne Park side on the 30th October. This was the first game of the league, and although our team lost 14-22, the result does not do justice to their commitment and effort. Well done girls. The first round of the National Cross Country Cup was held at Perins School, Alresford on Wednesday 3rd October. Congratulations to Lewis G and Rebecca W who achieved 16th and 18th place respectively in the face of very stiff competition. Our Year 7 Girls’ Cross Country team are currently leading the Year 7 section of the The Southampton Schools’ Cross Country League after the first two races. All girls ran exceptionally good races, with Jessica L winning the first race, and achieving second place in Race 2, whilst Rosanna G deserves praise for coming second and fourth in the races.
We also lead in the Junior Girls’ section of the league, and are currently placed second in the Year 7 Boys’ section. Well done to all our runners. Keep it up! The Year 11 foorball team had a very exciting match against Bitterne Park on Tuesday. Goals from Pip N (3), Connor Dl (2) and Jack M (1) failed to secure victory in the match which ended with a final score of 7-6. In the match against Oaklands School on Tuesday, the final score of 5-0 to the home side did not reflect the fine team performance from The Gregg School, who were beaten by a very strong Oaklands side. The Gregg School pole vaulters finished their summer season in early September with all five to be found in the Power of 10 rankings (www.powerof10.info/) nationally. Wednesday 26th September - the first fixture in the Southampton Schools’ Cross Country League took place at The Gregg School in windy but sunny conditions. All pupils who took part in the race gave 100% effort and were all very enthusiastic. The official results have yet to be announced. The next league race will take place on Wednesday 10th October at Monksbrook, with the first round of the Cross Country Cup being held at Perins School, Arlesford on Wednesday 3rd October. Pupils will be selected to represent the School in the Junior Girls’ (U14) and Intermediate Boys’ (U16) sections. Monday 20th September - our Year 10 Football team made an excellent start to the league programme in their match against St. Mary’s. Goals by Toby (3), Miles (2), Richard (2) and Darren (1) aided by a strong defence secured an 8-3 win. Unfortunately the team did not fare so well in the cup match against Priestlands School this week, losing 1-3 to the First Division side. The Year 11 Football team scored a 2-1 victory against Testwood in their league match with goals from Pip and Will.
