Sports Highlights for the Year 2006 to 2007

Summer Term 2007

A team of 80 Gregg School pupils took part in the Southampton Schools Track and Field Championships on Thursday 21 st June, producing an amazing array of medals – 6 gold, 12 silver, 15 bronze and three relay medals. Pick of the crop were our Year 10 girls, who won their age group. The Year 10 boys were second and there were third places for Year 9 boys and Year 7 girls. The City Champions are:-

Ben B     -   Year 10 Boys High Jump

Alex W     -   Year 10 Boys 400m

Claire T     -   Year 10 Girls Long Jump

Jennifer H     -   Year 10 Girls Discus

Alfredo S     -   Year 9 Boys Triple Jump

Peter N     -   Year 8 Boys Long Jump

Year 9 Boys relay team (Toby D, Richard H, Conor M, Stuart R and Alfredo S).

Well done to all who took part and contributed to the success of our teams.

The Senior House Rounders Competition took place on Thursday 7th June, with Trojan House taking first place ahead of Romans and Spartan.

The House Tennis Competition provided Roman House with valuable points, winning both the Junior and Senior Sections.

The Senior Girls' Rounders Team also triumphed in their match against Woodlands School on Wednesday 6th June, winning a very close match by half a point.

The Year 10 Cricket Team played against Hampshire Collegiate School on Thursday 5th June. In the 50 over match, HCS batted first and scored 165-5. Our team then went into bat and scored 157-6. The result was a “winning draw” as HCS batted over their allotted overs (i.e. 25) and therefore would have had to bowl us all out to achieve a victory.

Success for Cricket and Rounders teams

Well done to the Lower School Cricket Team who scored a convincing win against St. Mary's in their match on the 4th June. Excellent bowling and fielding from The Gregg team resulted in 8 wickets being taken for 57 runs, and our side achieving 58 runs without the loss of a wicket. (Ross B and Peter C scoring 28 and 30 runs respectively).

Claire T produced another personal best, 2.10m, at the National Young Athletes League at High Wycombe on Sunday 3rd June, whilst Simon P vaulted 2.50m to take 2 nd place in the Under 17 men's competition at the same venue. Richard H only began his vaulting after all the other competitors in his age group had gone out. After three successful vaults, he was attempting 3.65m, when things went dramatically wrong and Richard landed heavily in the plant box. Richard was taken to Stoke Mandeville Hospital for x-rays and scans, which revealed badly bruised muscles. Richard is now fortunately back on his feet, but is unlikely to compete in the forthcoming County Schools' Competition.

The ups and downs of pole vaulting…

Richard H struck gold again at the South of England Championships in the Under 15 Boys pole vault on Saturday 26th May. Richard took the title with a 3.55m vault. He now holds both indoor and outdoor titles in his age group.

Brother Peter equalled his personal best whilst vaulting for Team Southampton's men's team at the Sports Centre, Southampton on 2nd June. By far the youngest vaulter, Peter helped the team to second place on the day.

Monday 14th May The lower school Cricket team made an impressive start to their match against Bitterne Park School on Monday, with the opposition's score standing at 20 for 5 at the half-way point in the match. The team was well captained by Harvey and Ben, and some fine bowling and fielding skills were displayed. Unfortunately Bitterne Park came back strongly and we eventually lost the match.

Following their success in the recent National Young Athletes League, Hannah and Claire T both produced new personal bests to take silver and bronze respectively in the Under 17 women's pole vault at the County Athletic Championships last Saturday. The cold windy conditions took their toll on Richard's record attempt in the Under 15 Boys' competition, although brother Peter took the silver medal and Simon P

achieving a creditable 4 th place in the Under 17 men's event.

English Schools Track and Field Cup

The School entered three teams (Junior Girls, Intermediate Girls and Intermediate Boys), and despite the wet and windy conditions in Portsmouth , our athletes produced some excellent performances.

In the Junior Girls' event, Rebecca W achieved a bronze award score (high jump and 800m), and there were also good performances from Denise C(1500m), Jordy T (1500m), Alexandra C (Shot Putt), Robyn G (Discus) and Lucey V (Discus).

Despite being short of a full team due to illness, the Intermediate Girls' team scooped four bronze awards – Claire T (Long jump, 100m), Laura Z (100m, relay), Zoe P (200m, relay) and Emma D (Discus, relay).

The Intermediate Boys' team produced the biggest points tally on the day with two athletes achieving silver (just 2 points shy of gold award scores): Richard H (200m Pole Vault) and Andrew P (200m, Discus). There were bronze award scores for Stephen B (Hurdles, Triple Jump), Ben B (100m, High Jump), Toby W (800m, Long Jump), Myles T (800m, High Jump) Samuel (Javelin, Relay) and Conor M (Shot Putt, Relay).

Weekend of 5th May 2007 Congratulations to James W (Year 9), on his excellent performance in the International 50 Mile March held at RAF Cosford last weekend. James was the youngest member of the Air Training Squadron team which achieved third place in the March, beating 97 other teams, many of which comprised serving members of the armed forces.

Junior House Basketball Competition on Thursday 3rd May. Despite Tim H's impressive scoring for Roman House, Spartans' consistent efforts gave them first place ahead of Romans.

Spartan's win in the Year 9 section of the House Rugby Competition gave them further championship points, although Roman House denied them victory by a narrow margin in the Year 7/8 section. Top scorers were: Toby D (8), Conor M (7), Stuart R (5), Alexander H (5), Joshua R (5), Kevin H (4) and Misha J (4).

Monday 23rd April - Annual Swimming Gala held at The Quays, Southampton on Monday produced a number of outstanding performances. The following pupils deserve particular praise for their achievements:-

Joshua S, Louise D, Sadie F, Hannah W and Alexander O.

Trojan House were winners of the Junior section, with Spartan claiming victory in the Senior competition.
