Music NewsTurner Sims Concert An appreciative audience was treated to a varied programme of music at the Annual Christmas Concert on the 10th December. Soloists and ensembles demonstrated a wide range of talents, entertaining with a seasonal selection of pieces alongside some original works by Year 11 pupils. Carol Service Parents, pupils, staff and friends packed the Church of the Holy Saviour in Bitterne on Tuesday 11th December for the School’s Annual Carol Service. A highlight of the traditional service was the choir’s beautiful singing interspersed with accomplished readings by pupils from all year groups. The Minister’s Christmas message was equally well received by the congregation. A collection was made on behalf of the Mayor’s Appeal. Concert raises funds for Abbey The concert given by the School Choir and instrumental soloists at Alton Abbey on the 13th Decemberraised over £350. This was the last in the series of musical events during December. Mr. Bradley would like to thank the pupils who took part in the events for their hard work and commitment. Thanks are also extended to parents whose support, encouragement and assistance were vital in ensuring the success of these events. The School Wind Band provided an entertaining afternoon’s music for young pupils on Friday 12th October. Children from Banister Infants, Townhill Infants and Townhill Junior Schools enjoyed a packed programme which included a rather unusual rendition of “The Grand Old Duke of York” on a variety of wind-powered instruments, including a toilet (the “Boghorn”) a teapot, and a watering can! A massive thank you to all the parents who supported the Choir at their debut appearance at Bitterne Parish Church on Sunday 7th October. The 32 members of the Choir sang beautifully and were applauded by the appreciative congregation. The Choir’s appearance at the Church heralded the start of “Music Week”. Other events during the week included workshops in African Drumming, led by Sue Beckett from Portsmouth Music Services, a lunchtime recital by Flautist Charlotte Bettle and a concert by the Wind Band for children from Banister Infants and Townhill Infant and Junior Schools.
Musicians in the School will be in demand during the second half of the Autumn term, with five concerts scheduled for the various ensembles.
