April 2007 As usual, the House Poetry Writing Competition produced a high standard of entries. In the Junior section Suzy C was awarded first place for her thoughtful, sensitive “Remembering You”. Rebecca W was second, while Sian L and Evie P shared third place.

Nine poems were Highly Commended and a further seven reached the final of the competition, with Spartan and Trojan sharing first place in the Junior Section.

The quality of entries in the Senior section was extremely high, with several students offering two or three well-crafted pieces. The winner was Ben C with “Needlepoint”, an evocative reflection on the Needles area of the Isle of Wight. Jacob W achieved second place and Jonathan W was third. These entries gave Spartan House victory in the Senior Section, with Trojans and Romans gaining second and third place respectively.

A large number of entries was received for the Junior Section of the Original Writing Competition.  As in previous years, the high standard made it difficult for the judges, which meant that there was some sharing of positions and no fewer than twelve `Highly Commended` entries.  The winning piece was a convincing and well-crafted story by Samuel Nunn – well done!  Naomi Gunawardena and Sophie Wilson shared second place while Charlotte Black and Naomi Nixon were joint third.

The Senior Section attracted fewer entries but there was nevertheless an impressive range of really original writing.  Jessica Butler’s engaging, beautifully written piece was the clear winner, with Jade Roberts second and Matthew Morris and Sophie Langridge sharing third place.
