Comments from pupils on Work Experience

The pupils are asked to write about what they did, what they liked and what was different about their time on work experience.  Below is a selection of what some of them said, in their own words:

Hair & Beauty I loved working there.  They treated me like one of the girls.
School I helped with Sports Day, marked maths work, read to the children.  Its and OK job but not the job for me!
Restaurant The work was tedious at times but I enjoyed being treated as a functional adult member of the staff.  At the end of my work experience I was given a job.
Green keeping I really enjoyed working with the other green keepers.  It was a lot different from school because you get a lot more freedom and responsibility.  It was good training for me and I am now a part time Green keeper.
University I had to watch people, generally help with things like setting up experiments, using equipment, talking.........I enjoyed talking to lots of people, learning about people's research, getting to do experiments and using equipment.  It was different being treated like an adult and talking to people using their first name, even doctors.
Sports Centre I had to play and organise games for children; including football, cricket, basketball and a keep fit class.  I also had to use the till, answer the telephone and serve nonalcoholic drinks.  Work experience was very enjoyable yet also tiring.  The children were interesting and fun to be around.
Nursery I played with the children and fed them.  It is very different to school.  Working is more hard work than school.
Day Nursery I played, fed and cared for babies.  As the weeks wore on I began to get tired and bored of the same everyday routine.  In the end I had mixed opinions about leaving.  I had grown fond of all the children and babies and the staff had been really kind to me.  I learnt a lot about myself.
Florist I could wear my hair down without any-one moaning and wear jewelry.  I delivered flowers, bought flowers, cut and arranged flowers.  The worst job I did was de-thorn roses.  I loved everything else.
Brick laying I had to wear old clothes with steel toe caps.  Its really hard work but rewarding when you finish a job.  I loved working with all the workers and may get a job in the summer.
Golf course I had to stock take, answer the phone, take bookings and collect the range balls with the buggy.  I was surprised I was allowed to play golf in my lunch breaks.  It was boring when it rained because no one wanted to play golf.
Army We had to camp out in the open after doing a rescue mission and we had to do 40 sit ups and 40 press ups in 4 minutes and straight after that we launched into a mile and a half run around the camp.  The highlight was going on a gun range.
Pre-school I used lots of communication skills with staff and children  The staff make me feel useful and part of the team.  It was exhausting.
