Year 10 Work Experience
This year we had a wide variety of placements. Nurseries, Schools and Vets proved ever popular, and there were also new locations; Annie and Josh worked at “The Rosebowl” over the very busy time of the 20/20 matches and County games. Emma is a budding florist, so she thoroughly immersed herself at Maddisons in Eastleigh, where she was taught the finer art of floristry and discovered a lot more to the field than she thought. A beautiful display of flowers created by Emma was shown on her stand for presentation day.
Rory - an accomplished Hampshire golfer - spent his time at “Taylormade” golf headquarters in Basingstoke, managing to see all the behind-the-scenes aspects of his favourite sport, and Eden was able to work in an Antiques shop in Lyme Regis.
Alex spent his two weeks at “Marine Matters” in Warsash. This marine-based company charters boats from luxury to power and also holds RYA courses on the River Hamble. The owner Henry Hillier supported Alex all the time as well as allowing him to be water bound as Alex is a qualified rib user. Alex revelled in his time there and learned so much. It was Mr Hillier’s first time with a Work Experience student so both gained new skills!
My work experience placement was at “SO Catering” in Otterborne. While I was there I learnt how to
prepare vegetables, how to make wraps, I decorated the sandwich platter and I was also serving
customers. It was a really enjoyable experience as I might think about going into a catering course.

I had a great week working at Fairthorne Manor, YMCA. I was working in the Nursery with children from 18 months to 2 years. The other employees I was working with were very friendly. We got along very well and they really helped me to settle in and have as much time as I could working with the children and creating activities for them.
We did a lot of outside work, mainly playing in the gardens or creative work. I really loved organising games and helping out. I had to do quite a bit of tidying after meals and games but it was fun and I thoroughly enjoyed my week there. I would definitely consider working there again and recommend it to anyone doing work experience.

I spent one week at Shield Veterinary Centre where I observed operations and appointments. I wasn’t sure if I would be able to handle seeing blood and guts, but I did, and I actually found it really interesting! I learnt how the vets put the animal under anaesthetic by shaving their fur on one of their front paws and finding the vein and slowly injecting the white substance into it until they go floppy and fall asleep.
There were a couple of emergencies - one when a greyhound had to have a thorn removed from its back paw, and another emergency was when I unfortunately got more involved; a puppy Labrador had managed to get to and eat galaxy ripple bars! The vets injected him and seven minutes later he started to throw up everything that was in his stomach. I had to catch it but I missed the first time! I really enjoyed being there - I’ve been invited back and would love to go.
