MUSIC

Head of Department Mr D S U Bradley

The Music Department is situated in a new suite of rooms. The new facilities include a large classroom and practice rooms.

Years 7, 8 and 9 currently follow a course called "New Music Matters". The course is based on practical work (though this is supported by tuition in the theory of music when and where appropriate) and it combines the disciplines as required by the National Curriculum, that is to say, performing, composing and listening/appraising. The pupils following the course will learn to use the keyboards and the computers. They will also listen to and appraise ethnic music.

In years 10 and 11, pupils who opt to study music will follow the GCSE syllabus of the Edexcel (London) board and use both 'Sibelius' and 'Cubase' computer programs during the course.

Wind Band at the Royal Marine School

The Gregg School Jazz Band

Instrumental teaching is available within the department and this is given by well qualified instrumental specialists. Pupils are encouraged to perform publicly and they may also be entered for the grade examinations of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, Trinity College of Music or the Guildhall School of Music.

Pupils who are primarily wind or brass players of Grade 5 standard are given the opportunity to attend a work experience week at the Royal Marines School of Music in Portsmouth during year 10 or 11.

Within the department, there is a choir, (which usually meets in the Autumn Term,) a wind band, a jazz band, a rock group, a brass group and a chamber orchestra.  The jazz band has produced a CD which is available from the school, priced at £5.00.
