Both Food and Nutrition and Child Development are taught in the Home Economics department. 

Home Economics classFOOD AND NUTRITION

Home Economics is a compulsory subject for all pupils in Years 7 - 9. The main aim is to introduce pupils to the enjoyment of food with an emphasis on safety, hygiene and healthy living.

The course is designed to equip pupils with good basic cooking skills whilst also encouraging them to use investigative techniques throughout the study of food.  Please click here to see some of the recent topics covered.

Home Economics: Food + Nutrition GCSE is an optional subject in Years 10 and 11. The course covers a wide range of topics. The main topic areas are food choices, nutrition, preservation, safety and hygiene and choosing equipment.

Assessment
The course requires pupils to complete one individual task 30% and two resource tasks each carrying 10%. The final examination paper at the end of two years carries 50%.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT
Child Development GCSE is an optional subject in Years 10 and 11. It is a popular subject with pupils and looks at the development of a child from conception through to the age of five.  As part of the course, pupils take home one of the "interactive babies".  Please click here to see what the pupils thought of having the babies home overnight.

The course is designed to have a practical and investigative approach to work.

The coursework is enhanced by visits to local infant schools and into the community to research information. Visiting mothers and babies and guest speakers are also very much part of the course and are very helpful with much valued practical and up to date knowledge
