DRAMA

Head of Department Mrs S Charisse

Drama is taught as part of the English curriculum by all members of the ENglish Department; there is no separate Drama Department in the school.  We believe that Drama is an integral part of English and each scheme of work includes Drama activities which are relevant to its area of study.  Drama is an option for GCSE.

The aim of the fourty minute lessons each week given to each teaching group, is to extend the opportunities for Speaking and Listening activities in English.  The skills of collaboration, discussion and performance are emphasised as students work in pairs or small groups, preparing performances based on stimulus material or improvising roll plays.  Enjoyment is an important objective as students often develop oral skills more effectively when working in a less restricted area and a more relaxed atmosphere.  A new Drama course is now being used by the Department in order to ensure students' progression in Drama skills from year 7 to 9.  However, text-based activities remain and important part of our teaching in Drama.  Drama lessons are timetabled to take place in the Drama Studio (Room 12) or the Hall, although  use is made of the school grounds (weather permitting), particularly during the summer Drama Competition.
