Head of Department G Bartlett

The Design Technology department is situated on the ground floor of a converted barn, withDesign and Technology Graphics room the music department occupying the upper floor.

There are two main areas of the department; the graphics/work room and the practical workshop.  There are twelve networked computers where pupils use both universal "Office" and desktop publishing software, and also dedicated graphic design and presentation software.

Design and Technology work room All pupils in Years 7 to 9 are taught Design  and Technology in small teaching groups as part of their Technology rotation, which also includes Art and Design, Home Economics and Child Development.   Pupils are taught to extend and develop their initial ideas and keep a record of the techniques and materials they use in project booklets.

During Year 7 the pupils are encouraged to learn and reinforce basic presentation and construction techniques whilst being introduced to vital workshop safety requirements and the necessary strategies involved within the Design Process.

In Year 8 pupils are encouraged build on the foundations laid in Year 7 and extend their creativity, presentation and developmental skills with the introduction of new constructional techniques, materials and practical skills.

Year 9 pupils work far more on their own, using the project folders as a guide only.  By the end of this year, pupils should be able to use the Design Process almost unaided.  This allows them more time to explore and learn additional construction techniques, the properties and limitation of materials, and to improve practical and workshop practice.

In Year 10 pupils have the option of studying either Design and Technology - Resistant Materials or Design and Technology - Graphic Products for their GCSEs in Year 11.
