ART AND DESIGN

Head of Department Mrs E L Coppack

Drawing and Painting

The basic skills of Drawing and Painting are developed during the first three years but pupils will also experiment with a wide variety of different materials in preparation for GCSE.

The targets of the National Curriculum are achieved by carrying out work that involves recording from life, imagination and memory, and gathering and using resources and materials. In addition pupils learn to recognise the work of different artists and to understand the development of Art.

GCSE Art allows pupils to develop their own individual skills through coursework which is worth 60% of the final mark and a ten-hour examination piece worth 40% of the total.

Textiles

In addition to learning the importance of safety in the use of the equipment in the textiles room, pupils are taught the basics of hand and machine sewing. They apply their design skills to a variety of sewing techniques such as appliqué, embroidery and soft sculpture and early stages of fabric decoration are taught such as dyeing, painting and printing in preparation for GCSE work where a wide range of skills and techniques are developed.

Pupils who opt for this GCSE course will use these skills, techniques and processes in their coursework which is worth 60% of their total mark and in their ten hour examination which is worth 40% of the total.
